ACT Statement on Election of President Donald J. Trump

While we are saddened by the election of Donald Trump, we take heart in knowing that Americans  overwhelmingly support abortion rights and access to vital reproductive health care for all. Medication abortion remains safe, affordable, and available to women and pregnant people nationwide through telemedicine, no matter what the incoming administration plans to do when in power.  ACT will continue our work to make medication abortion available by telemedicine and to support clinicians and patients nationwide to have access to safe and affordable care.

This election outcome undeniably threatens reproductive health and freedom across America, and telemedicine abortion—the fastest-growing abortion method—faces particular risk. ACT is steadfast in our work countering any disinformation and barriers the new administration and its allies may attempt to impose.

We foresee three immediate threats from a Trump administration aimed at restricting access to abortion and miscarriage care:

  1. Overturning evidence-based FDA policies and guidelines for mifepristone.

  2. Appointing an anti-abortion US Attorney General to enforce the outdated Comstock Act, criminalizing the shipment of abortion medications by mail.

  3. Turning the Department of Justice into a tool of the anti-abortion movement, refusing to defend emergency room care and pushing for the criminalization of healthcare providers and supporters of telemedicine abortion.

This will create an environment filled with fear and misinformation, harming women, pregnant people, and their families. Yet, anti-abortion efforts cannot reverse the momentum of telemedicine abortion. We saw that last night, with several states passing ballot-related abortion measures and polling data supporting these rights. ACT stands firmly committed to ensuring that women have safe, legal access to abortion medications on their terms.
